Rooftop Rainwater Harvesting for Sustainable Water Use

At the core of the Hindalco Kuppam project lies an advanced rooftop rainwater harvesting system designed and implemented by JB Group. The large rooftop areas within the facility were scientifically mapped to collect and channel rainwater through specially designed rainwater harvesting filters. These filters ensure clean, debris-free water reaches the storage tanks and recharge structures. Over 19,000 square feet of roof area is now effectively utilized to capture and recharge rainwater, reducing dependency on freshwater sources and minimizing surface runoff.

The filtered rainwater is directed to borewell recharge pits and storage tanks, creating a sustainable cycle of reuse and groundwater replenishment. The system’s performance is monitored regularly to maintain efficiency and ensure water quality meets safety standards.

Scientific Recharge Pits and Groundwater Recharge Pond

To maximize infiltration, multiple recharge pits and rainwater and groundwater recharge ponds have been constructed strategically across the campus. These structures allow harvested rainwater to percolate into the subsurface, enhancing the local groundwater table. The design incorporates filtration media like pebbles, sand, and activated charcoal to ensure only clean water enters the soil strata.

This decentralized recharge approach has helped Hindalco Kuppam achieve measurable improvement in nearby well water levels, proving the effectiveness of a well-planned rainwater and groundwater recharge system. The project stands as a model of integrated design—combining surface storage, filtration, and infiltration in one sustainable framework.

Moving toward Water Positivity

Hindalco Kuppam has made significant progress toward becoming a water-positive unit, meaning it recharges more water into the ground than it withdraws for its operations. Through efficient recycling, reuse, and rainwater harvesting, the facility has reduced its freshwater intake by over 40%. The company’s commitment aligns with India’s vision of sustainable industrial growth, where every manufacturing plant contributes to the conservation of natural resources.

JB Rainwater Harvesting Company’s design ensured that every drop of rainfall within the premises contributes either to direct use or groundwater recharge. The plant also uses treated wastewater from its recycling system for greenbelt irrigation and dust suppression, making it a true example of circular water management.

Community Engagement and Environmental Awareness

Beyond industrial benefits, this project has created a large social impact. The Hindalco Kuppam initiative has inspired nearby schools, residential communities, and institutions to install rainwater harvesting systems using JB Rainwater Harvesting Filters and simple recharge pit models. Awareness programs organized at the site encouraged hundreds of students and local families to visit and replicate the model in their own homes.

The surrounding region, which once faced summer water scarcity, has witnessed visible improvement in water availability thanks to improved groundwater levels and community participation. Tree plantation drives supported by treated water further enhanced the local environment and biodiversity.

A Model for Industrial and Community Water Sustainability

Hindalco Kuppam’s success proves that industries can achieve both operational efficiency and ecological responsibility by adopting sustainable water management systems. With rooftop rainwater harvesting, recharge pits, and rainwater and groundwater recharge ponds, the project has set a new benchmark for water positivity in India’s industrial sector.

Through this collaboration, JB Rainwater Harvesting Company continues to lead India’s movement toward water-secure and climate-resilient futures—offering scientific, cost-effective, and long-lasting rainwater harvesting solutions for industries, institutions, and individuals.
